Batik is an Indonesian method of cloth dyeing, where areas of the design are blocked out by applying hot wax over them, then dye is applied on top and the parts covered in wax resist the dye and remain the original colour. A simple batik can be just one layer of wax and one dye, but the process of waxing and dyeing can be repeated many times if necessary to create more elaborate and colourful designs. After the final dyeing the wax is removed (usually in hot water) and the cloth is ready for displaying (from the BatikGuild). Harriet Peck Taylor is a well-known batik artist. Her work today sells for upwards of $1000.
This one is in great vintage condition. Few scuffs, and a couple faint blemishes to cloth (as pictured), where painting must have gotten wet and dye bled. Wire on back. Approx. 30.75”x25”
